First letter is a pseudo class element that will render the first letter of any text contained within the tags to display differently that the rest of the text within those tags. This is very similar to how many newspapers and magazines begin their stories. In this example, we have the first paragraph of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address contained within p tags and the first letter is set to 200% the size of the rest of the text within.
